Music

"Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity.” (DfE Model Music Curriculum 2021)

Music at Rufford provides a unique vehicle for children to express themselves, tune into their emotions and uncover hidden talents. Through a range of musical experiences, children’s creativity has no limits!

Children at Rufford learn through music lessons and through opportunities to perform in class assemblies. Our children will be taught music in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. Our children will gain experience and skills of a wide range of dimensions of music in a way that will enhance their learning opportunities. We use the Kapow Scheme of Work as a basis for our Music Curriculum.  Embedded within the teaching of music at Rufford are different strands: Performing; Listening; Composing; and, in Key Stage 2, the History of Music.  These strands develop from Early Years to Year 6 in order to unleash children’s musical potential.

We work with a specialist music teacher from one of our Trust secondary schools to further develop our teachers' skills and our curriculum.  We provide enrichment opportunities such as our school choir and all our children will experience watching live performances.  In the last year, our children have worked with the Welsh National Opera and our Year 5 and 6 children have visited the Royal Opera House in London.

Through our music programme, we are able to support the development of the whole child.   We strive to ignite in our children a love and passion for Music and we use music as a tool that can be used to support wellbeing as well as a vehicle that provides children with the opportunity to show our values.
